"NOMADIC COMMUNITY GARDEN" (c. 05-2014 ~)
FLEET STREET HILL, SHOREDITCH, LONDON, E1  ... in process
[
written 10-2018]

The " Nomadic Community Garden" occupies a 'difficult-to-profitably-develop' plot of land in one of London's strongly beating social 'hearts' (Shoreditch). It occupies a portion of a triangle - from its pointed end for 120 widening meters - that is almost completely enclosed by two sets of rail-lines that converge on its west point. In the Garden's 54m transverse east boundary is its vehicle-access, via the access-road of a housing estate that fills the triangle's remaining 275 meter broadening east part. From this road (Pedley Street) a narrow path to the west squeezes between the Garden's southern fence and the railway's concrete wall, rising towards its dramatic leap across its older cousin-lines at the triangle's western point. Here the Garden's pedestrian entrance is located and the narrow path dives south under the bridging railway into a bald public-park and an alley to Brick Lane.

In 20## [ref GOO PIC 09-2014 of 1st(??) huge east-end 'mural' on a cleared site]  this abandoned triangle was appropriated and cleared by 'squatters' and (with usage permission from its owner-Developers) has since been continually elaborated.

The " Nomadic Community Garden" is a hub of relatively free activities; a concentrated, bounded, enclosed 'experimental-yard' whose particular creative freedoms (mainly wall-painting) nevertheless engage with and spread into its immediate surroundings. Its existence in a crowded city - in which everything is 'normally' owned, sold, or provided within severe behavioral/usage restrictions by public authorities - is justified (and might become recognised as socially essential) via its role of sustaining a place whose behavioral restrictions are somewhat more associated with 'home' than public-places (parks/streets/buildings). An environment that 1, can be freely used, added-to, and changed by any individual who wishes to perform and publically share personal creative experiments; 2, which gifts small garden box-plots (approx 2m cubed boxes) to surrounding flat dwellers to grow (usually) vegetables; 3, which provides semi-organised tutoring in crafts and (overtly or implicitly) in social tolerance.

We very rarely (at least in this culture) have an opportunity to experience environments that have no sudden boundary between chance (eg "rubbish", &/or objects and materials simply 'behaving themselves' ... not 'in use') and intentional constructions: architecture, buildings, art-objects, paintings, furniture, paths, relaxing places and leisure facilities ... there is so rarely a continuum between these 'normally' completely different/kept-separated  types of objects, arrangements, formations. Cleanness / hygiene / aesthetic purity / clarity of intention and use / etc., demand that our artificial made environments are clearly functional, confined to our uses, unmuddled by the untrammelled 'behaviour of the world'.

I first visited the N-C-Garden in March 2018.

People entries:

1: From Allen Gardens (a large flat grass field to the east of Brick Lane and south of the Overground train lines) walk to the SW-gate - pass under the railway through the huge graffitied opening in the north wall of Allen Gardens and the Community Gardens gate faces you across the W end of the long graffitied path that flanks its S side.

2: At the SE corner of the Community Gardens - at the E end of the long graffitied path that flanks its S side - there is a vehicle gate that is sometimes open. For the intrepid this graffitied E end (called Fleet Street Hill) can also be reached from the north - over the main railway lines via the graffitied Pedley Street Bridge, accessed via an alley beside 72 Cheshire Street.

APPROACH & ENTRY TO THE N-C-GARDEN AT ITS WEST END

Southeast of the intense social activity around Shoreditch High Street station and the north end of Brick Lane there is a rather dismal poplar-fringed field called Allen Gardens, bounded along its north side by the wall of the rising Overground railway. Through this massive barrier there is a large opening

'AREA 1' - THE WEST END PORTION OF THE N-C-GARDEN SITE

Area-1 is at the pointed end of the triangular site - which for approx 36m is too narrow to conveniently accommodate structures in its centre, it has thus become an entry-courtyard-like space edged with, on its N-side, sit-places along the graffitied boundary wall, and on its S-side with larger structures and their associated services: from the site's entry-gate; past an 'introductory' gift-store; past a quite complex cafe; and finally a childrens' play place with a grounded boat. By then the site is becoming broad enough to accommodate central structures as well as peripheral paths and a continuation of facilities along the site's edges.

We are standing just within the start of 'Area-2' - the part of the triangular site where increasing width allows development of structures at its centre as well as along its edges. As it widens towards the East its central area is increasingly elaborated - first (as here) seating and planting and then more and more complex buildings.

Opposite the cafe and boat, the N-side of 'Area-1' is barriered with a long wall (that screens the Garden from the main rail lines to Liverpool Street). In spite of representing a colossal effort of painting the graffiti decor on this whole long wall has been changed (at least)

N-C-GARDEN: [AREA-1, E-END] INFO NOTICE
(pic 25-03-2018 / to E)

The east-end of the site's 'entry-plaza' (my 'Area 1') is signalled by a notice-board that conveys information on the N-C-Garden's history.

This notice-board is the first of the central structures that are enabled by the widening of the triangular N-C-Garden site.

.

N-C-GARDEN: [AREA-1, E-END] INFO NOTICES
(pic 28-09-2018 / to EES)

This notice-board is the first of a complex of structures and facilities that occupy the centre of the N-C-Garden through 'Area-2 and -3, accommodated by the widening of the triangular site and extending from the small group of wooden-box planters and seats that back onto this notice all the way to its east end.

During the ensuing 6 months [ref previous pic] this notice board has acquired two new messages, revealing this loose community's broad tolerance of personality types. A sentimental commercial icon of a teen-girl-guitarist asserting the ultimate profundity of "Me" and an astonishingly undecipherable 'instructional' notice opportunistically screwed to the Site-Info board.
.

'AREA 2' - THE CENTRE PORTION OF THE N-C-GARDEN SITE

The widening of the triangular site towards the east is now sufficient to accommodate free-standing placements in the centre of the site as well as on both sides. This has initiated a new proliferation of structures - an 'Area-2', densely packed with invented buildings, huts, sit-places, art-objects, etc..

LEAVING THE N-C-GARDEN VIA ITS E END

Though the N-C- Garden is an autonomous entity - discovered and conceptually initiated by an individual(??) and organised, built and 'furnished', by a co-operating group - it passively influences and extends 'creative permission' into its immediate surroundings, which (partly because they are only sparsely used by the 'general public') are continuous in terms of graffitied decoration with the densely painted N-C-Garden. Because of this I have bracketed my recording of the Garden itself with recordings of the two branching routes that lead to/from it.

It is also possible to access the N-C-Garden from the NE. Next to 72 Cheshire Street is the yard-entry to the (graffitied) Pedley Street Bridge, over the main railway (which fringes the N-C-Garden's north side) to the south . Descend from the bridge onto Fleet Street Hill and walk through a densely graffitied, probably 19thC tunnel to its south end at Pedley Street. Here, at the N-C-Garden's SE corner is its vehicle-entry-gate which is sometimes open. If this is closed turn right along the path between the Garden's S-side fence and the (continuously graffitied) concrete wall of the elevated railway, at its far end you will discover the Garden's SW entry gate. [ref above: 'Approach & entry to the west end']
